Diana Woltereck has been a resident of The Zone for 20 years. She is active in the community and loves her life. She may be short in stature, which earned her the nickname “Pee-Wee” when growing up, but that doesn’t stop her from taking the bull by the horns and getting things done.

What do you do for a living? I am a registered nurse by training and currently work part-time as a wound care nurse at GBMC. I love direct patient care nursing and love where I work. I also own a small managed healthcare consulting firm and have been a consultant in managed healthcare for over 25 years. I cut back my consulting time a few years ago because I travelled quite a bit all over the country and I wanted to be at home more. As a consultant I have been an administrative surveyor for the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) which provides accreditation and certifications to managed care organizations based on their quality initiatives.
What is great about your job? I work from home doing my consulting and travel some. As a clinical nurse I love the people I work with and the interaction with patients and their families. The clinical work is very rewarding and makes me realize everyday how thankful I am for my health and well being. We deal with a lot of very sick and fragile patients.

Where do you live? Parkton

How long have you lived here? 20 years

What is the best thing about your neighborhood? It is a private, off the beaten path, neighborhood with the best neighbors anyone could ever have. Everyone looks out for one another and lends a neighborly hand whenever the need arises. I recently had three separate surgeries and I don’t know what my husband and I would have done without them.

How would you describe your family? The best! I have a wonderful husband (Jim), two married sons (Hank and Gregory) and their families, a wonderful grandson (Tyler), two sisters (Susan and Jane) and their families who live in the area. Whenever we get together we always laugh about funny family stories or events of the past and just basically enjoy each others company.

Are you involved in the community? How? I am very involved in my church community, Epiphany Episcopal Church in Timonium. I serve as a chalicist, usher and coffee hour hostess, do the monthly worship volunteer schedule and have been involved in many of the fundraisers over the years (Fall Auction, Basket Bingo, Spring Flower Fair). I have also been involved in the Seventh District Recreation Council for the past 14 years as the Commissioner/Chairperson for the Drama Program. The program is run as a summer camp at Hereford High School during the month of July. There are two, two-week camps that run all day. Both camps perform a musical at the end of the session. This years the first session is doing Alice in Wonderland, the musical, and the second session is doing Willie Wonka, Jr., the musical. The Seventh District website has the dates and times. www.seventhdistrictrec.com

Favorite local restaurant? Soup R’ Natural

Where did you go to high school? Towson High School

Favorite event in the area? The Fourth of July parade

What was your first car? Yellow VW Beetle

Do you have pets? What? Yes, 3 Labrador Retrievers, Frances is 13, black and the only female. Jack is 5 and chocolate and Buddy is 5 and yellow. We have had Frances and Jack since they were 8 weeks old, but we adopted Buddy from a lab rescue a little over a year ago.

What is your favorite hobby? Why? Gardening. I love the outdoors and spending time in my garden is just so relaxing. We have a pond and a pool and the running water atmosphere is very soothing and relaxing. I have another hobby I have also done for 35+ years. I have a stained glass shop in my basement and create everything from sun catchers, stepping stones to windows. It is a very relaxing hobby but is defi nitely an indoor one. I do most of my stained glass creations during the colder months and gardening during the warmer months.

What are three words you would use to describe yourself? Energetic, creative and friendly

I don’t want to admit it, but… it is hard for me to not be doing something creative, even sitting still I am usually working on some project.

If you won the lottery, what would you do? I would donate a lot of the money to my family members, church and other charitable organization. I have been very fortunate in my life and had the opportunity to receive good fortune, so I would pay it forward.

Where is the most interesting place you have been? Ireland

Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you? I love squirrels. My first experience with successful raising of baby grey squirrels began in the 1970s. I have raised many, many grey squirrels, and a few chipmunks, and successfully released them back into the wild. They are fascinating animals to watch mature into young adulthood. I have had them as young as seven days old with no hair, closed eyes and ears. They require special formula and food as they begin to grow. We also have special cages that simulate the outdoors so they become accustom to nature and not people.

The following was received in an e-mail nominating Diana for “Getting to Know” - “Diana is just amazing. She works full time as a nurse and gives four weeks in the summer to host a drama camp for the kids in our community. She opens her home for auditions, to allow the parents to get to know each other and ask questions, and for a celebratory party for all involved in the camp. I just think that she is selfless and an all around nice person.”
