Oldfields shares their diverse love of music with the community
Oldfields School has always placed an important focus
on the arts. The School offers multiple performing arts
and visual arts courses, in addition to student-run groups
including Art and Design Club and Playmakers, an
improvisational theatre troupe. This past fall, Oldfields
took this emphasis on the arts to a new level by
introducing The Oldfields Concert Series. This spring,
the School will once again open its doors to the
community and welcome three talented musical groups.
Oldfields’ fall performances included “An Evening of
Broadway” with Stanley Wayne Mathis, the Maryland
Boychoir, and the Old City String Quartet. After his performance, Stanley Wayne Mathis offered a dance
master class for the students. Since appearing at Oldfields, he is now rehearsing for Nice Work If You Can Get It, starring Matthew Broderick. The School is hoping to take a group of students to see the show when it opens.
The spring lineup of The Oldfields Concert Series will feature The Johns Hopkins Gospel Choir, duo Magpie, and The United States Navy Band, the Commodores.
The Johns Hopkins Gospel Choir will perform on February 17 at 7:00 p.m. in the newly-renovated David Niven Theatre. According to the group’s website, The Johns Hopkins Gospel Choir “spreads the gospel of Jesus Christ to the Hopkins campus and Baltimore community through song and worship. [They] aim to provide a setting where people of all backgrounds, races, and religions can grow in the love and knowledge of Jesus Christ.” The group is led by Musical Director Jesaira Glover and President Karlene Graham.
Musical group Magpie will perform on Friday, March 23 at 7:00 p.m. in The David Niven Theatre. The duo consists of Greg Artzner and Terry Leonino, who have been playing music together since 1973. Experimenting with many different genres from classic country to blues, Magpie offers something for everyone. The group has toured extensively, performed in festivals and folk clubs all over the world, and recorded several albums.
The Commodores will entertain the community on Friday, April 6 at 7:00 p.m. Weather permitting, the show will be held outside on Oldfields’ grounds. The Commodores are a specialty unit of the United States Navy Band, composed of 18 of the Navy’s best musicians. They have appeared on “Good Morning, America” and in previous years have had the opportunity to perform with greats like Ray Charles, Stanley Turrentine, and Louie Bellson.
“We are indeed fortunate, thanks to International Humanities, Inc., to be able to share the talents of so many inspiring musicians with our friends and neighbors in Baltimore County, as well as with our student body,” says Oldfields Head of School Taylor Smith. We hope you will join us for these three dynamic performances!
