“For Our Troops” is a volunteer organization run by students of Hereford High School in attempts to support those who have previously been or are current members of the armed forces. The club was created in 2006 by a Hereford Alumni, Ms. Courtney Sullins who, although currently residing in Florida, is still in contact with the club’s advisors, Mrs. Cathy Aitken of Parkton and Mr. Todd Hartshorn, the faculty advisor at the school.

The club supports the soldiers and the loved ones of the men and women protecting the rights and freedoms of Americans at home and abroad. We make it our mission to help our soldiers in any way that we can. We send care packages twice a year to soldiers overseas and attend special events known as “OPERATION WELCOME HOME” at BWI when soldiers who are on our mailing list return from their tour of duty.

The club is financially supported solely by donations along with the club’s fundraising efforts at the Hereford Fall Festival. The club would like to publically acknowledge the efforts of Dr. Koven’s Office in Hereford for being our greatest donor since the club’s inception in 2006. Along the way, we have received several awards for our efforts, including the 2011 National Guard Child and Youth Program Award. In addition, we were invited to the Governor’s Mansion by Governor Bob Ehrlich for the signing of HB 850 which protects the families of
fallen heroes from attacks by people protesting the war at military funerals.

Last year, we led a Memorial Day Observance at Hereford High School that paid tribute to all those who have fallen in the line of duty and served our country, it was televised by Fox 45 and WBAL 11.

The “For Our Troops” club needs your help. If you know of any soldiers or families who have a loved one involved in the military, we’d greatly appreciate you contacting us so that we can include them in our holiday care packages and other support projects. We could also use your donations, any amount, large or small, is helpful.

Thank you and thank you to the men, women and children who are actively serving in the armed forces or keeping the faith at home until their loved ones return safely.

Todd Hartshorn and Sarah Bacon
